Going  Against the Current

In, 2 Henry IV (5:2) Shakespeare wrote:

“You must now speak Sir John Falstaff fair, which swims against your stream.”

In modern times people say “your swimming upstream” (or against the current), which means you are going against popular thought or opinion.

If you’re an ocean beach swimmer this means you are trying to fight the rip tide current by swimming against it. Well known advice is don’t go against it; just float and yell, while waving at the life guard for help!

Swimming Against the Current

is done to achieve a better workout. I personally go to my local swimming pool at 5:30 am when it opens, because at that time of day no one is in the ‘lazy river’.  The pool allows me to swim against the current in the ‘lazy river. The menu tab, “Swimming Against the Current” will feature posts about what pools I have found that will allow swimmers to use their lazy river to swim against the current. You will be informed of the process in which you can use their facility to do this too.

I swim the butterfly stroke. Most hotel swimming pools are too small for me to swim laps. I have to do a turn every 3 to 5 strokes!

I am searching for hotel pools that have a swim against the current machine, like Endless pool’s ‘The Fast Lane’ machine; as I find these pools I will list them in a post on this site. You will find the list under the menu item ‘Swimming Against the Current’, subcategory, the name of the state.
